An individual profited close to $500,000 by predicting the removal of the Venezuelan leader immediately preceding it was made public, sparking debate about potential gains made from confidential information of the US operation.

Market Movement in Predictions

Predictions made on the forecasting site, a crypto-powered platform, that the leader would be removed from office by the close of the month surged in the hours before former President Trump stated on the weekend that the Venezuelan leader had been seized.

A single trader, which registered on the site recently and placed four wagers, all on the Venezuelan situation, made more than $nearly half a million from a modest bet of $32.5K.

The identity is unknown. The user had only a cryptographic address for identification.

Market Signals Before News Break

Platform data shows that traders assessed the probability of a political change at just under 7% in the afternoon of the prior Friday.

Yet the market's assessment had climbed to 11% by late Friday night and surged in the morning of the next day, pointing to a sudden change in positions immediately prior to the official statement was made.

"This specific wager has all the signs of a transaction based on non-public details," stated an industry expert.

Several of other traders also earned large payouts from bets on the same outcome.

Regulatory Scrutiny Intensifies

Politicians are growing concerned.

Proposed legislation introduced on recently would prevent public officials from placing bets on prediction markets if they have "insider details" related to a market.

Prediction markets have grown significantly in the past few years, with participants able to wager on everything from elections to political events.

Prediction markets were examined under the previous administration. But it has experienced less resistance during the Trump presidency.

Trading on insider information is illegal in the traditional financial markets, but there are less oversight in the event betting arena.

A company executive for a competing service said their site "strictly forbids trading on insider information of any form."
